9/11 Day is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that created and annually organizes the September 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance as a permanent tribute to those killed and injured on 9/11, and to the many brave individuals who rose in service in response to the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
Our ongoing mission is to transform the annual remembrance of 9/11 into a worldwide day of unity and doing good, and to encourage millions of people to remember and pay tribute each 9/11 through the spirit of unity and good deeds that help others and rekindle the extraordinary spirit of togetherness and compassion that arose in the immediate aftermath of the 9/11 tragedy.
Our signature programs include our "9/11 Day Meal Packs," large-scale volunteer service projects held on 9/11 in cities across the nation, where tens of thousands of volunteers join together in partnership with AmeriCorps and local Feeding America food banks to pack millions of dry non-perishable meals for people in need. We also work annually with World Central Kitchen to deliver tens of thousands of freshly prepared meals on 9/11 to say thank you to our nation's first responders. In collaboration with Discover Education and other education partners, we deliver innovative lesson plans, videos and other resources to inspire millions of students to engage in good deeds in observance of 9/11 Day. We also lead and work with a coalition of more than 150 prominent national nonprofits and service organizations to help promote tens of thousands of other 9/11 projects held around the county.
For the 20-year remembrance of 9/11, our nonprofit co-produced the one-hour television special “Shine A Light,” which reached more than 3.8 million people worldwide in partnership with CNN. We are pleased to have donated the majority of the funds contributed online to us during this program to support other leading 9/11 and first responder charities. These include: 9/11 Memorial & Museum, Pentagon Memorial Fund, and Friends of Flight 93 National Memorial, Tuesday's Children, 9/11 Tribute Museum, Voices Center for Resilience, Cantor Fitzgerald Relief Fund, FealGood Foundation, New York Says Thank You Foundation, Heart 9/11, New York City Police and Fire Widows’ and Children’s Benefit Fund, and the Jim Fassel Foundation.
