Lt. Col. Robert Grunewald was in an Executive Officer meeting on the second floor of the Pentagon when American Airlines Flight 77 struck the building about 75 feet from where he sat, and blew up the conference room. He jumped onto the conference room table and made his way on top of it to ensure his friend Martha was safe. She grabbed his belt, and the two crawled a circuitous dark, smoky, route to safety over the plane that burned just beneath them. Robert still proudly works at the Pentagon today.
